ACADEMIC RESEARCH &
PUBLIC HEALTH LEADERSHIP

Transforming Australian Healthcare & Drug Safety

Dr. Berbatis’ clinical and academic career has delivered enduring structural improvements to Australia’s health system over more than five decades.

Key Clinical & Public Health Contributions

  • Establishing National ADR Reporting (Churchill Fellowship): Through four seminal professional papers and a prestigious Churchill Fellowship, Dr. Berbatis played a pivotal role in establishing Australia's formal Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) reporting system — a core pillar of national drug safety that remains active 50+ years later.

  • Western Australia’s First Clinical Pharmacist: Appointed as the state's first Clinical Pharmacist, he introduced hospital Drug Usage Evaluations (DUE) to rationalise and improve prescribing practices across Australian hospitals — a technique that became an international benchmark.

  • Licit Opioid & Psychostimulant Prescribing Oversight: Pioneered research linking the importation of licit opioids and psychostimulants directly to regional prescribing habits.

    • Uncovered excessive morphine-related prescribing in the Northern Territory and high psychostimulant prescribing in Western Australia.
